What Are Churro Chips?
These churro chips are a delicious variation of the traditional churro pastry but in a lightened-up chip form! Traditional churros are fried and coated in cinnamon and sugar. These chips have the delicious flavors of churros while being baked instead of fried. Also, instead of preparing a dough made of flour, water, sugar, and butter, we used lavash flatbreads. This recipe is easy to make and the flatbread becomes crispy once baked. These churro chips are such a delicious and healthier snack option with the flavor of churros!
Ingredients Needed
- Flatbread: Use two flatbreads for this recipe.
- Sugar: Use sugar or a 1:1 sugar-free alternative such as monk fruit.
- Cinnamon: Mix ground cinnamon with the sugar for the classic churro flavor.
- Coconut Oil: Use coconut oil spray so the seasonings stick and the chips become crispy.
How To Make Churro Chips
Step 1: Evenly cut the flatbreads into even-sized pieces, about 1 inch in size. Cut the flatbreads in half, stack them, and then cut them in half again.
Next, cut the flatbreads into thirds, and then thirds again.
Step 2: Thoroughly mix the cinnamon and sugar in a bowl.
Step 3: Lightly spray a sheet pan with coconut oil. Then, arrange the cut flatbread pieces on the sheet pan in a single layer.
Step 4: Spray the top of the flatbread pieces with coconut oil. Then, use your fingers to evenly distribute the cinnamon and sugar mixture over top of the flatbread pieces.
Step 5: Bake the churro chips on the sheet pan at 350°F for 5-6 minutes. Once done, let them cool and enjoy!
Serving Suggestions
Enjoy these churro chips on their own as a delicious snack, or even dessert! They can be served in a bowl or with dipping sauces such as caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, or dulce de leche for added indulgence. We love dipping these chips in our dark chocolate hummus. Also, you can serve them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or fresh berries.
Expert Tips
- Mix Cinnamon and Sugar: Thoroughly mix the cinnamon and sugar in a bowl so they are evenly distributed amongst the chips.
- Evenly Season: Use your fingers to evenly distribute the cinnamon and sugar mixture over the cut flatbread pieces on the sheet pan.
- Add Cinnamon and Sugar To Taste: Sprinkle the cinnamon and sugar over the cut flatbread to taste. You may have some leftover seasoning, which is fine.
- Don’t Burn The Chips: Keep an eye on the chips as they bake to ensure they don’t burn. You want them to be crispy, but not overcooked or burnt.
- Cook In Batches: Cook these churro chips in batches so you don’t overcrowd the sheet pan. It helps ensure the chips are crispy and evenly cooked.
Storage Instructions
Store leftover churro chips in an airtight bag at room temperature for 4-5 days so they stay fresh and crispy.
Variations
- What Oil Spray To Use: Use coconut oil or avocado oil spray. We don’t recommend olive oil, as the flavor of coconut or avocado oil tastes better with the cinnamon and sugar. Olive oil is more savory, while these chips are sweet.
- Flatbread To Use: Use lavash flatbread. Astoria’s traditional lavash bread or Joseph’s lavash bread are great options.
- Some Flatbread Substitutions: Instead of lavash flatbread you can use pita bread or tortillas.
- Different Shaped Chips: You can cut the flatbread to make square or rectangular-shaped churro chips. Or, use a small cookie cutter in any shape to make different-shaped chips. I like making chips in the shape of hearts with a small heart-shaped cookie cutter.
