How To Make These Parmesan Cheese Crisps
Start by preheating your oven to 400 degrees F. If you are using fresh parmesan, grate it to the consistency you would like. Then, get a baking sheet with a silicone baking mat. A silicone baking mat works best, but if you don’t have one parchment paper will also work. After that, place the freshly-grated or pre-shredded cheese on the mat or parchment paper and spread and flatten it out. Bake the cheese crisps in the oven at 400 degrees F for 3-5 minutes. Make sure to keep an eye on them so they don’t burn.
Let the cheese crisps cool and remove them from the baking sheet. You can place them on a paper towel to absorb some of the oil after you remove them from the baking sheet. If you’d like spicy parmesan crisps, feel free to add some red pepper flakes on top! Top these cheese crisps on your favorite dishes or enjoy them as a crunchy and delicious snack! You can experiment with the different cheeses and consistencies to find out which one you like best.
A Few Notes & Tips
How Do I Store My Parmesan Cheese Crisps?
I like to make these parmesan cheese crisps fresh as I am going to use them. But, if you want to make more you can store them in the refrigerator for 2-3 days in an air-tight container or a zip lock bag. Just make sure to bring them to room temperature before using them because the flavor is stronger once they get to room temperature. Another option is to place them in the oven to warm them up for about a minute.
What Kind of Parmesan Cheese Should You Use?
For the most flavorful and delicious parmesan cheese crisps, I recommend getting a block of Parmesan cheese from a parmesan wheel. You will find them cut into smaller size pieces at most grocery stores. This will give you the most flavor from your cheese. The flavors are the best when just freshly grated and made. If you don’t use the parmesan cheese after grating it, the cheese will tend to lose some flavor. This is why I personally like to use a chunk of parmesan from the parmesan wheel and grate it as I need it.
If you can’t find the parmesan cheese from the parmesan wheel, pre-shredded parmesan cheese will also work. Just keep in mind that the texture of the pre-shredded parmesan cheese is chewier than the consistency of freshly grated cheese. The pre-shredded parmesan cheese still works great and the cheese crisps have delicious flavor!
What is a Parmesan Cheese Wheel?
A parmesan cheese wheel is a large wheel of cheese with a rind on the outside of the cheese. Parmesan cheese is shaped in a round wheel that comes from Italy. The wheel is anywhere from 70+ to 80+ pounds. That’s a lot of parmesan! Parmesan cheese is only made in Italy, specifically in the provinces of Reggio Emilia, Parma, and Modena to name a few.
How Long Will a Block of Parmesan Cheese Last in the Refrigerator?
The block of parmesan cheese will last wrapped in your refrigerator for about 2 months and can be taken out and grated when needed. I like to store mine either wrapped in parchment paper or plastic wrap and I like to put mine in an airtight container, but this is optional. Once you are finished with all of your parmesan cheese you can save the rind of the cheese (the outer edge) in the freezer. These are great to use later in a stock or soup for added flavor.
