What Onions To Use For French Onion Chicken

White, brown, yellow, or sweet onions will work perfectly in this recipe.

How Many Onions To Use

This recipe calls for 4-5 medium-sized onions, giving you many caramelized onions in every bite. We have found that this is the perfect amount of onions. The onions get smaller when they cook down and caramelize. We feel that you can never have enough caramelized onions as they are so incredibly delicious!

Add Thyme

Thyme adds flavor to this french onion chicken. Fresh thyme sprigs or dried thyme will work in this recipe.

Balsamic Glaze Or Balsamic Vinegar

You can use balsamic glaze or balsamic vinegar in this recipe. Either way, it will add another layer of flavor to the french onion chicken. We like to use the balsamic glaze as it is more concentrated in flavor but if you don’t have it balsamic vinegar will also work.

What Cheese To Use

This french onion chicken skillet is topped with melted cheese. We melted Gruyere cheese but light swiss cheese and light mozzarella cheese are other great options.

Season French Onion Chicken

This french onion chicken is incredibly flavorful. It is perfectly seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic, oregano, and thyme. Also, the balsamic glaze and beef broth add complexity and classic french onion flavor.

Tips For Making French Onion Chicken

Caramelize The Onions

It is very important to caramelize the onions. The process of caramelizing onions takes some time but is incredibly worth it. It will take about 20-25 minutes for them to caramelize in the skillet, and they will continue to caramelize while the chicken cooks. Make sure to caramelize them for the complete amount of time, or longer. This will ensure you get all of the delicious flavors. This french onion chicken will not be the same if you don’t caramelize the onions.

What Chicken To Use

We prefer to use chicken tenders when making french onion chicken because you get more caramelized onions with the chicken. However, we have made this recipe with boneless skinless chicken breasts, which is delicious as well. You just taste more of the chicken in each bite. If you use chicken breast, cook it longer and until it is fully cooked.

The Best Way To Slice Onions

First, cut both ends off the onion, then cut it in half, in half again, and then thinly slice the onion. Repeat this process to cut each onion.

Use Beef Broth

The beef broth gives this dish the classic french onion flavors. Chicken broth does not provide the same delicious french onion flavors as beef broth. So, definitely make sure to make this french onion chicken with beef broth.

  • 1/4 TSP pepper

  • 1 TSP garlic powder or 2-3 cloves of fresh garlic, crushed

  • 1 TSP oregano

  • 1/2 TSP thyme or 3-4 sprigs of fresh thyme

  • 1 bay leaf

  • 1 CUP beef broth

  • 2 TSP balsamic glaze or balsamic vinegar

  • 1/2 CUP Gruyere cheese or 1 CUP light swiss cheese or light mozzarella

Directions

  • Cut all of the onions. To do this, cut both ends off of each onion, cut the onion in half, cut the onion in half again, and then thinly slice the onion.
  • Season both sides of the chicken tenders with salt and pepper.
  • Add the butter to a large skillet on the stove over medium-low heat. Then, add the sliced onions, salt, pepper, garlic, oregano, and thyme to the skillet.
  • Cook the onions in the skillet until they are browned and caramelized. It will take about 20-25 minutes to caramelize the onions. Move the onions around occasionally while they are caramelizing.
  • Once caramelized, move the onions to one side of the skillet and add in chicken tenders. Brown the chicken tenders in the skillet for 3-3 ½ minutes on each side over medium heat.
  • Pour the balsamic glaze into the pan, this will deglaze the pan. Scrape off any bits that are stuck to the pan and mix. Next, add the beef broth to the skillet. Also, add the bay leaf. Let everything simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked.  Chicken is fully cooked when it reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees F.
  • Once the chicken is cooked, remove the bay leaf. Then, sprinkle the cheese on top. Put the lid on the skillet to melt the cheese. Enjoy!
