Notes & Tips For Slow Cooker Apple Butter

What Is Apple Butter Made Of?

Apple butter is made of apples and spices. In this homemade apple butter recipe, we used apples, cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, vanilla extract, lemon juice, lemon zest, and water.

What Do You Use Apple Butter For?

Apple butter has many uses and adds flavor to so many dishes! It’s especially delicious on toast, muffins, overnight oats, and ice cream. It is a super yummy apple spread.

How To Thicken Apple Butter

If you want your apple butter thicker after it cooked for 5-10 hours, take the lid off of the slow cooker and continue to cook it for 1-2 more hours. It will thicken it up by absorbing the moisture. Stir and check until you get the desired thickness.

How To Make Mini Apple Pie Tarts

If you don’t want to puree the apples to turn them into apple butter, you can leave them chunky. We love leaving some of the apple butter chunky and pureeing the rest. You can use chunky apples to make mini apple pie tarts! They are super easy to make and a delicious treat. These apple pie tarts taste just like apple pie! Also, they are lightened up and healthier than apple pie. We love using Athen’s mini phyllo dough shells to make these mini apple pie tarts.

What Is The Difference Between Apple Butter and Applesauce?

Apple butter and applesauce are very similar, but they are not the same. Apple butter is much thicker and richer in flavor than applesauce. Also, applesauce is a lot thinner and has more water content.

Is Apple Butter Actually Butter?

No, apple butter is not actually butter. Apple butter has a similar texture to applesauce. It is called apple butter because of its smooth butter-like consistency.

Is Apple Butter Healthy?

Apple butter is a much healthier alternative to sugary jams. This homemade apple butter is healthy and can be made with no sugar! It’s seriously the best!

The Best Apples For Slow Cooker Apple Butter

The best apples for apple butter are honey crisp, pink lady, fuji, and gala. We used a combination of honey crisp and pink lady apples in our apple butter. We like using these apples because they are sweeter. This makes it so that no sugar needs to be added to the apple butter.

How Long Will Homemade Slow Cooker Apple Butter Last?

This homemade apple butter will last about a month in the refrigerator! It’s perfect to make ahead of time so that you have it on hand all season long.

Ingredients

  • 3 lbs chopped apples, about 7-10 apples

  • 1 TSP vanilla extract

  • 1 TSP lemon juice

  • 1/2 TBSP lemon zest

  • 1 TSP ground cinnamon

  • 1 TSP pumpkin pie spice

  • 1/2 CUP water

  • Optional: 1-2 TBSP golden monk fruit, brown sugar, or honey

Directions

  • Core, peel, and dice the apples. Then, zest a lemon.
  • Add the chopped apples, vanilla extract, lemon zest, lemon juice, ground cinnamon, pumpkin pie spice, and water to a slow cooker. Thoroughly mix all of the ingredients and put the lid on the slow cooker.
  • Cook the apples for 5 hours on high or 10 hours on low. If you want your apple butter to be thicker after that, leave the lid off to absorb water for 1-2 hours. Make sure to continue cooking the apples and stir occasionally until the desired consistency is achieved.
  • Once cooked, use an immersion blender to puree the apples into apple butter or leave them chunky. If you don’t have an immersion blender, you can puree them in the blender. Just let them cool first. This apple butter tastes amazing as is, but feel free to add about 1 TBSP of golden monk fruit, brown sugar, or honey if you would like. Enjoy!
