  • OWYN: For a non-dairy protein shake with plant-based protein.
  • Iconic: Use a chocolate Iconic protein shake for a keto-friendly option.

Ingredients Needed

Ingredients for chocolate peanut butter protein ice cream
  • Chocolate Protein Shake: Use your favorite pre-mixed chocolate protein shake.
  • Powdered Peanut Butter: You can use PB2 or PBfit powdered peanut butter. The powdered peanut butter adds peanut butter flavor while being lower in calories.
  • Instant Pudding Mix: As an option, add chocolate instant pudding mix for a thicker protein ice cream. You can use regular or sugar-free instant pudding mix.
  • Cocoa Powder: As an option, for a more rich chocolate flavor, add Dutch-processed cocoa powder.
  • Milk: We like to add a splash of milk before re-spinning the ice cream. It helps it achieve a creamy texture.
  • Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups: Mix in mini chocolate peanut butter cups or top with them when serving.

Step 3: Once frozen, remove the container from the freezer and let it sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes. Remove the lid of the container and if there is a peak, use a spoon to scrape it off so there is a smooth surface.

Step 4: Secure the container in the Ninja Creami machine. Then, press the Lite Ice Cream button. After the first spin the mixture may be powdery, so add a splash of your milk of choice and then spin again on Lite Ice Cream. After two spins, the mixture should be creamy and thick, if not, spin it again.

How To Serve

You can serve this chocolate peanut butter protein ice cream with your favorite optional toppings. Some great options are mini chocolate peanut butter cups, mini chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, chopped regular-sized peanut butter cups, or our homemade peanut butter granola! Or, for even more peanut butter flavor, drizzle with peanut butter or combine PB2 with water and drizzle.

Expert Tips

  • Smooth Surface: There may be a peak after freezing the mixture in the pint container. Use a spoon to scrape off the peak for a level surface before using the Ninja Creami machine, or it may have difficulty or break. We like to let it sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes so it is easier to scrape off the peak.
  • Thoroughly Combine: Ensure you thoroughly combine all the ingredients for the protein ice cream mixture.
  • Freeze The Mixture: Make sure to freeze the mixture in the pint container for at least 24 hours.
  • Add A Splash Of Milk: After the first spin, add a splash of milk before spinning again. This helps it achieve a creamy more ice cream-like consistency.
  • Spin It Twice: The protein ice cream may appear powdery after the first spin in the Ninja Creami machine. This is normal, just add a splash of milk and spin it again. If it is still not to your desired consistency, spin it again.

Variations

  • Make A Protein Shake: If you don’t have a pre-mixed protein shake, you can make your own! Make a chocolate protein shake with a cup of unsweetened almond milk or your milk of choice and a scoop of chocolate protein powder. Also, add the PB2 and optional add-ins such as cocoa powder and chocolate instant pudding mix. Thoroughly combine these ingredients and pour the mixture into a pint container.
  • Make It Vegan: To make this chocolate peanut butter ice cream vegan and dairy-free, use a vegan protein shake or make your own with plant-based milk and vegan protein powder.
  • Thickening Agents: Adding a thickening agent is optional, but you can if you want, for a thicker protein ice cream. Try adding one tablespoon of chocolate instant pudding mix or one teaspoon of sugar-free chocolate instant pudding mix. Or, opt for 1/4 teaspoon of xanthan gum or 1/4 teaspoon of guar gum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is This Protein Ice Cream Healthy?

This chocolate peanut butter protein ice cream is healthier than many traditional ice cream options. It is high in protein, low in sugar, and does not contain any heavy cream or whole milk. Also, we used powdered peanut butter for a lighter twist.

What To Do If The Ice Cream Is Powdery?

Don’t worry if your protein ice cream is powdery after the first spin. This just means you need to spin it again. We like to add a splash of milk and then spin it again for the best results. Also, spin it the second time on Lite Ice Cream mode again, don’t hit the re-spin button Spin it once more if it is still not creamy after the second spin.
