These bagels are high in protein and super easy to make with a few simple ingredients. You can’t taste the cottage cheese, it just gives these bagels the ultimate fluffy texture.

Serving Suggestions

Serve cottage cheese bagels as you would regular bagels. They are delicious with butter or cream cheese. You can even make a bagel sandwich and stuff them with your favorite ingredients. For another idea, slice and toast the bagel and add mashed avocado, sliced tomatoes, and a sprinkle of sea salt. A few slices of smoked salmon would be delicious, as well. Or, make an egg salad sandwich with these bagels and our cottage cheese egg salad! You could even make a breakfast bagel sandwich with scrambled eggs, cheese, and cooked chopped bacon or turkey bacon.

Expert Tips

  • Don’t Strain The Cottage Cheese: With our recipe, you don’t need to strain the cottage cheese! Simply add it to the bowl with the flour and knead.
  • Correctly Measure Flour: We recommend measuring the flour with a food scale to ensure you have the correct amount. You should have 1 cup of flour, which is 120 grams. Use the spoon and level method if you don’t have a food scale.
  • Mix The Flour Mixture: Thoroughly mix the flour, baking powder, and salt to ensure the ingredients are evenly distributed before adding the cottage cheese.
  • Fresh Baking Powder: Use fresh baking powder so the bagels rise. Check to make sure your baking powder isn’t expired.
  • Let The Bagels Cool: Once done, let the bagels cool for at least 15 minutes. They need time to cool and rest after baking. You can always toast the bagels once cooled and sliced to enjoy them warm.

How To Store Cottage Cheese Bagels

Once the bagels have cooled, you can slice them so they are easy to toast again later. Or, leave them whole. Store leftover cottage cheese bagels in an airtight container or bag, or tightly wrap them in foil. They will last for 3-4 days in the refrigerator. When ready to serve them again, reheat them in the oven or air fryer.

Variations

  • Self-Rising Flour: If you already have pre-made self-rising flour, you can use that instead of making your own for this recipe.
  • Bagel Seasoning: To make everything bagels, sprinkle with everything bagel seasoning after brushing with egg wash. Or, sprinkle your bagel seasonings of choice. For plain bagels, omit any seasoning.
  • Make More Bagels: You can easily double this recipe to make more bagels for meal prep! However, one egg is still enough for the egg wash, you won’t need two.
  • Flour To Use: We used all-purpose flour. You could also use whole wheat flour or a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.

    1. What’s your opinion on using Oat Flour?

      • Hi, we haven’t tested these cottage cheese bagels with oat flour, but you could try substituting it. Just keep in mind that it may result in a more crumbly bagel mixture, so additional cottage cheese may be needed to achieve the desired dough consistency. If you give it a try let us know how it goes, we hope you enjoy these bagels!
