Key Ingredients

- Protein Pasta: Helps boost the protein in this pasta salad without changing the flavor. Use your favorite protein pasta for this recipe. Brami and Kaizen are great options.
- Chicken: Chop or shred fully cooked chicken breast. Grill, bake, or air fry the chicken, or use our slow cooker shredded chicken breast recipe. Or, one of my favorite shortcuts is swapping in rotisserie chicken to save time!
- Bacon: We used turkey bacon for a lighter option, but regular bacon works too! Cook it until crispy, then crumble it into the salad. See our guide on how to cook turkey bacon in the oven.
- Cherry Tomatoes: Halved cherry tomatoes add a fresh, juicy bite and a pop of color.
- Bell Pepper: Diced red, yellow, or orange bell pepper adds crunch and sweetness. Use your favorite color or a mix!
- Green Onions: Sliced green onions add a mild, fresh onion flavor throughout the salad.
- Shredded Cheddar Cheese: We used light shredded cheddar cheese for that classic cheesy flavor.
- Greek Yogurt Ranch Dressing: The dressing comes together with plain non-fat Greek yogurt, ranch seasoning powder, and a splash of milk to thin it out. This keeps the dressing creamy, tangy, and high in protein, with no mayo needed! For another recipe with ranch seasoning powder, try our easy cottage cheese ranch dip next.

Substitutions & Variations
- Bacon Options: We used turkey bacon for a lighter option, but regular bacon works too! Applewood-smoked bacon would be delicious and add another layer of flavor. For more delicious recipes with bacon, try our crustless bacon and cheese quiche and easy bacon cheeseburgers next!
- Pasta to Use: I love using protein pasta here for another boost of protein without changing the flavor. You could swap in chickpea pasta, or if you don’t have protein pasta, this pasta salad will still be high-protein either way! You can use your favorite pasta or whole wheat pasta instead.
- Ranch Dressing: Make the dressing in this recipe with Greek yogurt and ranch seasoning powder for an easy and quick option. Or, make this recipe with our homemade healthy ranch dressing that uses fresh herbs. You can also use your favorite store-bought ranch dressing, if desired.
- Cheese Swap: Use shredded light cheddar cheese in this recipe for that classic flavor. Trader Joe’s Mexican light cheese works great here, too! For another option, swap the shredded cheddar with crumbled light feta or pepper jack.
- Avocado: Add diced avocado if desired for extra creaminess.
- Extra Veggies: Add peas or broccoli florets for even more veggies in this pasta salad.
How To Make High-Protein Chicken Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad

- Cook the protein pasta according to the package directions until al dente. Drain and set it aside to cool.

- Add the drained, cooled pasta to a large bowl. Add the chopped cooked chicken, cooked and crumbled bacon, halved cherry tomatoes, diced bell pepper, sliced green onions, and shredded light cheddar cheese. Lightly toss to combine.

- In a separate bowl, mix the Greek yogurt and ranch seasoning powder. Add the milk as needed to thin the dressing to the desired consistency.

- Pour the dressing over the pasta salad and toss until evenly coated. Enjoy right away, or chill until ready to serve.
Expert Tips
- Cook the Pasta Al Dente: Cook the pasta until al dente so it doesn’t get mushy once mixed with the dressing and other ingredients.
- Toss Before Adding the Dressing: Lightly toss the pasta salad ingredients together first, then add the dressing and toss again. This helps everything coat evenly.
- Reserve Extra Dressing: If making this ahead, reserve a few tablespoons of dressing and stir it in before serving, or wait to add the dressing until ready to serve. The pasta absorbs the dressing as it chills, so this keeps the salad creamy instead of dry.
- Chop Ingredients Evenly: Try to chop the chicken, tomatoes, and bell pepper into similar-sized pieces so every bite has a good mix of flavors and textures.
- Season to Taste: Taste your pasta salad before serving and add a little salt or extra ranch seasoning if needed. Protein pasta can sometimes need a touch more seasoning than regular pasta.
